Pomegranada
The pomegranate is one of the most symbolic fruits in all of world literature and art. It’s beautiful and durable red skin opens to gorgeous yellow flesh and bright ruby red seeds, evoking sensations of promise, ecstasy, and even wisdom. It’s a fruit that is almost embarrassing in it sensuality, with a delicious juice that is said to have healing powers, and certainly heals a broken heart or a bad mood. Eating one takes commitment, as well as certainty, and no small degree of boldness, because this is messy business. It’s certainly worth the stains, and certainly worth every bit of trouble, but very few fruits ask for the same amount of work, nor give the same amount of juice, as the mythical pomegranate.
It’s certainly fitting that the symbol for the city of Granada is the very same pomegranate. There is a deep sensuality about the place, high in altitude and still close to the coast, with a rich history that accompanies a rich land. It’s one of the most gorgeous places in the world, and deep enough inland that it’s still well hid, like the fruit inside the red skin. This is a spectacular place for luxury hotels. Granada holds nothing back, doing everything with style and finesse, and the accommodations are spectacular. A marvelous blend of the old and the new, the city speaks to contemporary obsessions as well as to the ancient obsessions, and perhaps these haven’t changed very much over time.
The idea of the pomegranate as a secret to desire, eternal life, wisdom, and health, is not particular to Granada, but it’s certainly a good place to get to know its history and symbolism. It occurs in every religion in the regions where the fruit grows. In Jewish tradition, it has 613 seeds to represent the verses of the Torah. In Judeo-Christian mythologies it is the fruit of knowledge from the garden of Eden. In Islam, this is the fruit of paradise. In Hindu cosmology, it is in the hands of many goddesses and gods and represents fertility. The list goes on. Of course, it’s also one of the healthiest fruits one can find, and people are rediscovering the health benefits of the pomegranate. Come to Granada to see for yourself, and maybe taste some of the fruits of wisdom.
