Coffee Makers for Coffee Lovers

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world and it is also one that is most consistent in its consumption. People who drink coffee tend to love coffee and they drink it at least once everyday. And while the popularity of coffee shops and cafes continues to increase, even in difficult economic times, enjoying a delicious espresso or soy latte from Starbucks or some independent coffee shop on a daily basis can exceed most budgets. Not only that, but the experience might get a bit dull if it’s a daily encounter. Regardless, the popularity of coffee shops and small cafes has done nothing to hinder the home coffee makers industry.

In fact, the reality is that personal coffee makers are continually increasing in popularity and this is due not only to the amount of coffee obsessed individuals that exist throughout the world, but also due to the technological sophistication that is part of today’s models. A home coffee maker is nothing like it was twenty years ago and personal espresso makers as well as digitally programmed brewers are extremely common. And the amount of optional features that are frequently included with any specific maker is as diverse as the population that purchases them. And regardless of medical recommendations that suggest limiting your coffee consumption to a cup or two a day, the amount of coffee that is consumed also continues to increase.

Italian Fusion Restaurants

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Italian fusion restaurants have been popping up all over North America. These new restaurants are definitely not your usual Italian restaurant . In Cypress, TX Romero’s Italian Fusion Grill serves both classic Italian dishes and Italian-Mexican fusion dishes like Fusion Enchiladas, an enchilada filled with red fish and shrimp, topped with creamy pesto sauce, and served with grilled vegetables. Italian-Indian fusion cuisine can be found in Toronto at 5th Elementt Fine Dining & Lounge, where you can order Lamb Kebabs With Mint Chutney or Tandoori Shrimp. In New York you can purchase a Natsumi roll an Italian-Japanese fusion of tuna, spicy tuna, avocado, apple, and basil at the restaurant that gives this roll its name.

Fusion cuisine started emerging in the 1970′s referring to culinary innovations that combined elements of various culinary traditions while not fitting specifically into any one. There are several approaches to fusion food. One approach is regional fusion that combines the cuisine of a region into one restaurant, like an Asian restaurant offering mandarin, Mongolian, and Vietnamese dishes. Another form fusion dishes take is more eclectic, like in the case of 5th Elementt in Toronto , where the dishes look like one region but have incorporated seasonings or cooking methods from an entirely different culture.

Since fusion cuisine is a general term, it is can accurately be applied to either sort of restaurant.. However, while many diners feature dishes from Greek, Italian, and sometimes Asian cuisines side-by-side or even mingled, they are not considered fusion because they lack a theme and fail to combine any elements of cooking styles. Unfortunately it’s hard to find fusion recipes to try at home since most are closely guarded by their specialty restaurants. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find your own fusion recipes combining which ever cultures suit your palette.

Green Coffee in Santa Monica

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

It isn’t that hard to find a good cup of coffee in California.  In Los Angeles, it’s rather ridiculously easy, because everyone is super-driven out here, and there’s not much time to sleep.  We depend on the bean to help us get through the days, and it is one of those things that makes life worth living.  There’s been a lot more education lately about coffee, and information available pretty widely about fair trade coffee.  Even the bigger chains have completely changed the way they do things so that they can at least position themselves toward serving fair trade, if they don’t already.

It’s a fantastic day when you can wake up in a hotel in Santa Monica, and head out to the beach with the one you love, stopping for a coffee along the way.  With places like the 18th Street Coffee House, there are lots of options here.  This place is particularly wonderful because of the atmosphere and ambience.  The wifi is a bit spotty, but that kind of makes it nice, because people sometimes get tempted into talking to other people.  This morning, we almost saw the beginning of a community starting here.

Someone there told us that Co-Opportunity is the local co-op (duh), and that’s where you can also buy free trade coffee for your house, and lots of other things as well.  There’s something about being in places like this, where there’s a genuine sensitivity and honest effort toward taking care of the planet.  It just feels so, so very California.  Maybe later on in the day, we’ll take in a yoga class, and then have dinner at an organic restaurant, where they serve side dishes with shredded carrot and ginger.  Or maybe, if we’re feeling more daring, we’ll have burgers and even take responsibility for it.

Flirting is Free in San Francisco

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

We arrived in San Francisco airport and with heavy bags draped over our shoulders and smaller bags in hands, we managed to take the Metro into the city and find our very inexpensive accommodations that we booked for three nights; here the link: http://www.sanfranciscocheaphotel.com. Our hotel turned out to be just what we were expecting, full of young travellers like ourselves.

Our first order of business was to find a true American burger, and with a little search on-line, we headed to a place called Pearls. It is the current winner of the San Francisco’s best burger award and when we took our first bite, we totally agreed. The burger was big, tasty and had tons of toppings, plus it was cheap! After being totally satisfied, we headed back to our hotel in need of much sleep, Jet-lag hit us hard. My travelling companion, didn’t quite make it back to our room for almost an hour after I did. She was waylaid by a German boy wearing a pair of tight pants in the lobby of our hotel. The next thing I know, there a Dutch guy in our room! Did I mention my travelling companion is quite the flirt?

In the morning, I did notice there were no men in our room and only a sleeping companion. Whew! We got ready and went out to find some cheap pancakes. We didn’t have to go far, right next to our hotel was a great breakfast cafe’. My pancakes were especially good. After breakfast and tons of coffee, we went on a ‘free’ walking tour into Chinatown. The tour was giving by a guy my travel companion met at a hostel right next to the breakfast cafe’. I knew she’d come in handy. He took us to sample dim sum and fortune cookies. Then we went over one of the mammoth hills were we good get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge and of Alcatraz.

As my travelling companion bid farewell to our free tour guide, we headed towards Fisherman’s Wharf. It was here where we would purchase tickets to Alcatraz, unfortunately, Alcatraz was sold out for the next week! Even my travelling companion couldn’t muster up some tickets from people lining up to board the ferry that would take them over the the Island. This really stunned her and put her in a daze. I ended up dragging her to Pier 39 to see and smell the sea lions soaking up the sun. This put a smile on her face, she was back and ready for our next adventure!

The North Carolina Lexington BBQ Festival: Do You Have What it Takes?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

So, you are ready to take your skills you have gained by the hours spent hovering over your built in BBQ to the next level, the BBQ festival and competition circuit.  This is a great step to choose to make, for not only will you get your own signature dishes out to the masses, you will encounter other BBQ chefs, and you may learn new recipes, new ways of spicing up your own creations.  One of the best of the best is the Lexington BBQ Festival in North Carolina.  The festival is a community event that has grown in popularity exponentially over the years, becoming the city’s most attended celebrations.  And so it should be, because BBQ is good, BBQ fills up not only your belly, but all of your senses.

From the sights, to the scents, to the sounds of the chefs preparing the meals, to the taste and to the feel of licking your fingers to get every last bit of flavor this is one fine way to spend the day.  Each year at the end of October, BBQ chefs from around the country show up and deliver.  This past year marked the 26th anniversary of the festival, and now October is the official “Month of the Barbecue”.  BBQ is a big deal.  Throughout the month there are various events, some not even related to cooking and eating, such as the biking event, “Tour de Pig”.  All the proceeds from this event are given to the Mental Health Association in the city.  There are also events such as the 5K Hawg Run, and golf and tennis tournaments.

When this festival began in 1984, just about thirty thousand people attended, and by 1994 that number had grown to over one hundred thousand.  Now, not only is it a food oriented event, but a musical and artistic celebration as well which draws people not only from the state of North Carolina, but from all of the states in the country.  So many non-profit and community services have gained the benefits of this festival, as it is one festival that just keeps on giving, from the days of the festival and those beyond.  So refine your backyard skills, and head out next year to the festival in North Carolina.  You will be amazed, you will have fun, you will never forget it.

Barbecue and the Perfect Moment

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Making the move to an outdoor kitchen is simple and elegant, and the rewards are immediate.  Fresh air and freshly-cooked food, and no one will be complaining about the new lifestyle.  It’s certainly a choice, and it’s such a fantastic one that it might be hard to remember what life was like before.  There are many options for the outdoor kitchen, but certainly one of the most appealing is to start with the whole set-up, and our barbecue islands can get you on the road.  There are many options to choose from, so that you can get exactly what you want, to meet your needs and your style.

Our barbecue islands are made with the newest technological innovations so they are state of the art, and can grill your food with extreme precision.  Accuracy in time and temperature are of the upmost importance with meats, and you’ll be creating fantastic flavors with ease and with dexterity.  Our grills are also made with the latest contemporary tastes in mind, but also with a great deal of attention to the classical appeal of the outdoor kitchen.  You get the best of the new and the old, then, and with a set-up that is truly ingenious.  Once you begin experiment with the cooking techniques that are possible with these, you might start to wonder if you’re heading for a Perfect Moment.

When your attention starts to turn to the precise instant where you are, for example, cooking salmon steaks glazed with mango sauce, and watching your guests enjoy themselves in your outdoor living space, then you are on the verge of the Perfect Moment!  Spalding Gray spoke about his search for the Perfect Moment in his film and monologue, Swimming to Cambodia, and it’s a great metaphor for what an outdoor kitchen can do.  His own search meant he had to go to a foreign country and make his own anxieties the center of his identity, and it wasn’t until the anxieties melted away that he enjoyed his Perfect Moment.  The key was to make room for it, and to do this, anxiety has to disappear, and cooking outdoors has the side effect of calming the nerves.  It’s unimaginably superb.  When a Perfect Moment is made possible, then you know you’ve decided to make pleasure, friends, and great food, some of your top priorities, and the rewards, as you can imagine, don’t stop.
